Mike Venezia Award

The Mike Venezia Award honors jockeys who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship, professionalism, and dedication to the sport of Thoroughbred racing. Presented annually by the New York Racing Association, the award recognizes riders whose character and conduct reflect the highest values of the racing community.

The award was established in memory of Mike Venezia, a respected rider known for his kindness, integrity, and willingness to support fellow jockeys. Venezia tragically lost his life following a racing accident at Belmont Park in 1988. In honoring his legacy, the award celebrates jockeys who demonstrate the same spirit of respect, camaraderie, and commitment to the sport.

Each year, the recipient is selected by a panel of jockeys, racing officials, and media members from nominees put forward by members of the jockey colony. The award is traditionally presented during the summer meet at Saratoga Race Course, where the winner is recognized for embodying the qualities that defined Mike Venezia’s life and career.
