MEMBERSHIP Levels & Dues
The Jockeys’ Guild offers membership categories designed to support jockeys throughout their careers—from their active riding years through retirement. Membership dues help sustain the Guild’s advocacy, safety initiatives, and programs that protect the health, welfare, and financial stability of professional jockeys.
Active Rider Membership
Active members receive full access to Guild representation, resources, and programs designed to support riders both on and off the track.
DUES:
- Annual dues are $100, paid at the beginning of each calendar year
- Designated mount fees.
ELIGIBILITY:

Professional jockeys who meet the Guild’s membership requirements are invited to apply for Active Membership. Becoming a member connects riders with the Guild’s advocacy efforts, benefits, resources, and programs designed to support jockeys throughout their careers.
To qualify, an applicant must:
- Hold a valid jockey license issued by a recognized racing authority.
- Have ridden at least one mount in a flat race at a recognized racetrack in the United States within the 12 calendar months preceding the date the membership application is received by the Guild office.

RETIRED RIDER MEMBERSHIP
Why Maintaining Your Guild Membership Benefits You in Retirement
As a Retired Member, jockeys stay connected to the Guild and can continue to access select member programs—like the life insurance benefit—available at an excellent rate.
When a jockey retires from active race riding, the Guild office will help complete the process to change the member’s status from "Active Member" to "Retired Member."
ELIGIBILITY:
Jockeys who were members of the Guild during their active racing careers may elect to continue their membership after retiring from race riding.
DUES:
Retired members may choose between the following options:
- Retired Membership with Life Insurance:
$105 annually ($25 membership dues, $80 insurance premium)
- Retired Membership without Life Insurance: $25 annually
- Retired 50-year Membership: Membership Dues waived, $80 insurance premium (upon qualification)
Permanently Disabled Membership
A Disabled Membership designation is available to Active Guild members who are unable to continue racing due to a permanent disabling injury sustained in a racetrack accident.
This status allows injured riders to remain connected to the Guild and maintain access to applicable programs and support services.
If an Active Member becomes permanently disabled as the result of a racetrack accident, the Guild office will work directly with the jockey to obtain the necessary documentation and assist in updating the member’s membership designation.
DUES:
Membership dues are waived for this membership level.
ELIGIBILITY:
Active Riding Members who sustain a permanent disability due to a racetrack accident and satisfy all medical criteria as determined by the Jockeys’ Guild.
ADDITIONAL SUPPORT:
Jockeys' Guild and the PDJF (Permanently Disabled Jockey's Fund) are two separate organizations, with different benefits and different eligibility requirements for benefits.

Permanently Disabled Benefits
This program is funded and managed through the Guild.
The Jockeys’ Guild is committed to supporting members who have sustained career-ending injuries while riding. Members who are deemed permanently disabled as a result of an on-track accident may qualify for continued benefits designed to provide ongoing financial and medical support.
Eligible permanently disabled members receive access to benefits such as life insurance coverage, reimbursement of certain medical and prescription costs, and assistance with approved medical equipment. In addition, qualifying members receive a waiver of annual Guild dues.
All eligibility determinations are subject to review and approval based on established medical criteria and Guild requirements.
Understanding the difference: Jockeys' Guild vs. PDJF
Understanding the Difference:
Jockeys’ Guild & PDJF
The Jockeys’ Guild and the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) serve complementary but distinct roles in supporting jockeys.
The Jockeys’ Guild is a membership organization that provides a broad range of benefits to active, retired, and qualifying permanently disabled members, including temporary disability support, insurance coverage, and member services.
The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) is an independent nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to jockeys—regardless of Guild membership—who have sustained catastrophic, career-ending on-track injuries. This support typically includes monthly stipends and certain medical-related reimbursements.
While both organizations are dedicated to the welfare of jockeys, their programs, eligibility requirements, and benefit structures are separate.
The Jockeys’ Guild actively supports and collaborates with PDJF efforts, particularly through industry engagement and fundraising.

WHAT OUR MEMBERS SAY ABOUT THE GUILD
Testimonials
With all of the issues we are facing today, jockeys must stand together. In order to accomplish what is in the best interest of the jockeys, including protecting our rights and increasing benefits such as increased pay scales, the Jockeys’ Guild is the only way for us to be united. However, that requires the participation and involvement of all our members. Our strength is in numbers and the Guild has been providing for us for over eighty-six years.

Mike Smith
Hall of Fame Jockey
Co-Chairman of Jockeys' Guild
It is critical that jockeys have a place at the table when industry groups discuss the future of the sport. The Guild gives the jockeys just that – a national voice that is guided by consensus rather than just one person’s opinion. The Guild speaks with one voice in the best interest of all jockeys.

John Velazquez
Hall of Fame Jockey
Former Chairman of Jockeys’ Guild
“I have been a member of the Jockeys’ Guild since I first started riding in the U.S. The Jockeys’ Guild is the jockey. It’s beneficial for all jockeys to be a member.”

Laffit Pincay, jr.
The Guild plays a critical role for jockeys in many areas nationally, but none more important than safety. The Guild has been in the forefront from the testing and development of improved safety equipment to raising the minimum standards of aftercare.
New equipment and cutting edge treatment are being explored by the Guild, something none of us could do on our own yet something that could benefit each and every one of us.”

G. R. Carter
Retired Quarter Horse Hall of Fame Jockey
Former Vice-Chairman of Jockeys’ Guild
