Luis Contreras wrapped up the 2018 Woodbine Thoroughbred season in style, winning his 2,000th career race on closing day of the meet.
Contreras started the day just one win away from the milestone and had a mount in 12 of the 14 races scheduled on the card. The notable win came in the fifth race aboard first-time starter He’s a Macho Man ($11.50) when the winning duo cleared a field of 2-year-old maidens by a length.
Contreras had a good week in addition to the milestone win. He won four races on the Friday card and finished the week as the third leading rider by number of wins. He was the ninth leading rider in North America by total earnings, adding $192,932 to his 2018 total of $6,553,368. His career earnings to date exceed $86 million.
With eight wins in 37 starts, Contreras maintained a 22% win rate and finished in the money on 38% of his starts. In 2018, he has won 139 of his 1,043 starts.
When the 2018 Woodbine Thoroughbred meet came to an end on Sunday, Contreras finished third by wins in the jockey standings for the meet with 119 victories in the season.
Contreras, 32, began riding in Mexico when he was 16; he won his first race in the United States in 2007 and his first win in Canada in 2009. He was honored with the Sovereign Award for Outstanding Jockey in 2011 and 2012.
