After reaching a career milestone of 2,000 wins last week, Joe Talamo was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for December 9-15, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.
Joe Talamo had three mounts scheduled for his first day of riding for the week on Thursday at Los Alamitos, but it only took the first race to roll the odometer from 1,999 victories to 2,000.
The career milestone happened in a starter allowance race aboard Rizzi’s Honors ($3.20) for trainer Mark Glatt. Talamo and the 6-year-old mare sat off the pace before making their move to finish first by four lengths in the dirt sprint.
Talamo won three of his nine races last week, bringing his 2019 total to 76 wins in 539 starts; he is 2,002 for 13,678 lifetime.
He added $55,062 to his 2019 earnings of $5,164,940 and career earnings that exceed $105 million.
Talamo’s 1,000th career win came in 2012 at Santa Anita, when he rode Splendid Fortune to victory for trainer Bob Baffert. The 29-year-old rider won his first career race in 2006 at Louisiana Downs.
Talamo finished fifth in the rider standings at the Los Alamitos Thoroughbred meet that ended on Sunday.
