Jockey Laurent Beaucamp, who was severely injured in a Sept. 5 spill at Monmouth Park, remains in critical but stable condition in the Level 1 trauma wing of the Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune City, N.J., where he continues to undergo varying surgeries to repair his numerous injuries.
On Tuesday, Beaucamp was having a plate and screws inserted into his broken left arm. On Monday, doctors "plated" the left side of his rib cage, according to a source close to the situation.
Beaucamp suffered damage to his spine in the spill and has not had any movement in his lower extremities since the accident. Last Thursday, he underwent surgery to insert titanium rods that will stabilize his spine.
A GoFundMe web page has been set up for Beaucamp, a 41-year-old native of France. The goal is to raise $20,000. As of Tuesday morning, the amount raised was $15,455.
Beaucamp's girlfriend, Pamela Miller, has been with him since the accident, and he has been visited as often as possible by his friend Nancy Ebersole and jockeys Luis Garcia and Janelle Campbell. Beaucamp's parents are in from France and staying near the hospital.
Beaucamp, a father of two, was injured while riding Irresistible Me. Beaucamp and Irresistible Me were attempting to come through along the inner rail in upper stretch of the first-level optional-claiming sprint on turf when the horse appeared to hit and then jump the temporary rail. Beaucamp was thrown hard to the ground and Irresistible Me then tripped over the rail and fell.
Beaucamp rode in the United States from 2008 to 2013. He returned to the U.S. early this year and is 1 for 10 since. His victory came aboard Irresistible Me in a $15,000 claiming race at Delaware Park on July 20.
Beaucamp galloped horses at Parx in the mornings for trainer Lupe Preciado, the trainer of Irresistible Me.
