With more stakes wins than any other jockey, Roimes Chirinos was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for October 21-27, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.

Roimes Chirinos started the New Mexico Classic Cup Day at Zia Park on Sunday with six mounts on the card of eight Thoroughbred stakes and four Quarter Horse stakes. By the end of the day, he would count three stakes wins, more than any other jockey last week, and lead all North American jockeys with his stakes earnings.

The racing festival celebrated horses bred in New Mexico for every distance and gender. Chirinos won the two premier events late in the card, including the $185,000 Rocky Gulch New Mexico Classic Cup Championship Stakes, defeating a full field in a wire-to-wire victory aboard Hustle Up ($4.60). Immediately preceding that race, he won the $175,000 Peppers Pride New Mexico Classic Championship Stakes for fillies and mares, this time routing the field from far back before closing to win by two lengths with Hennessy Express ($7.20).

He bookended the card by winning the first of the Thoroughbred stakes, the $145,000 New Mexico Classic Cup Distaff Sprint Championship Stakes with Waltzing Attila ($3.60). In the three races he did not win, he finished no worse than fourth. Four of his starts, including two wins, came for trainer Todd Fincher.

With $332,000 in stakes earnings, Chirinos led all North American jockeys last week by stakes earnings and was fourth by overall earnings, with $359,105 for the week. He has earnings of $1,678,483 in 2019 and over $12 million in his career to date.

Chirinos started in 12 races last week, winning four and finishing in the money on three other mounts. He has 70 wins from 303 starts this year and is 699 for 4,251 lifetime.

Chirinos is the third leading rider at the current Zia Park meet with 13 wins; current leader Francisco Arrieta has 21 wins and also made the ballot for his statistics and two stakes wins on the Sunday Championship card. Chirinos won the riding title at Zia in 2017 and was fifth in 2018; he has also finished among the top riders for the last two meets at Sunland Park.

Still in search of his first career graded stakes win, Chirinos was second in the $100,000 La Canada Stakes (G3) aboard K P Wildcat at Santa Anita in January of this year, running behind Escape Clause and jockey Tyler Baze.
