With six wins at Ellis Park on Sunday, Shaun Bridgmohan was named Jockeys’ Guild FoundationDetox.com Jockey of the Week for July 30 – August 5, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.
Bridgmohan wasted no time getting on the board as he swept the early pick 3. In the first race, a maiden special weight for 2-year-olds going one mile on the turf, Bridgmohan got the win aboard the Brad Cox trainee Pole Setter. In the second race, Bridgmohan helped get trainer Jason Barkley his 2nd lifetime win as he guided home Katie’s Reward. Bridgmohan and Cox teamed up again to take the third race with Shakes Creek leading from start to finish.
Race number six marked the beginning of the stakes races that were carded for the Kentucky Downs Preview Day, and once again Bridgmohan didn’t disappoint. Bridgmohan got his fourth win of the day aboard the Brad Cox trainee Arklow in the Kentucky Downs Preview Calumet Farm Kentucky Turf Cup.
“He’s a big ol’ horse with a giant stride to him,” Bridgmohan said. “Brad had talked to me about it and he just basically told me, ‘Don’t leave him too much to do.’ I warmed him up so he’d be on his toes when he left there. We could see there wasn’t a whole lot of pace in there. I adjusted a little bit what I needed to do. He laid close and still had enough at the end to get the job done.”
Not all of Bridgmohan’s wins were aboard the post time favorite. In the seventh race, Bridgmohan had the mount aboard Racer, a 5-year-old gelding trained by William Fires. Racer pressed the fast early pace set by Grandpa Knows Best, angled out into the lane, drew clear, and won by a length over Best of Greeley. Racer went off at 15-1 and returned $32.60, $15.00, and $8.60.
Bridgmohan’s last win came in the eighth race as he guided heavy favorite Mr. Misunderstood home in The Kentucky Downs Preview Tourist Mile Stakes. Mr. Misunderstood stalked pacesetter Siem Riep, shifted into the three path in the turn, and drew clear to win by 1 & 1/4 lengths.
The six-win day helped propel Bridgmohan into a tie at the top of the Ellis Park jockey standings with apprentice Edgar Morales at 18.
Bridgmohan finished the week with 7 wins from only 16 mounts for a win rate of 44% and finished in the money on half of his starts. In 2018, he has 90 wins in 420 starts and earnings of $2,938,387.
