After winning five races in a single card twice in one week, Frankie Pennington was named the Foundation Detox Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for October 1 – 7, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.
Frankie Pennington managed to pull off a difficult feat, posting not one, but two days with five wins each in the same week. The five-win days bookended his week at Parx, with five on Monday and five on Sunday.
On Monday, he won five of his seven mounts. The wins represented four different trainers and a combined 10 lengths. He returned on Sunday to win five races even more impressively, representing five different trainers and winning by a combined margin of 26 lengths, including an 11-length romp in the card’s opener to kick off four consecutive wins on the card.
With 12 wins in total, Pennington was the leading rider by wins for the week among all North American jockeys. In 26 races, he finished in the money on 62% of his starts and maintained a win rate of nearly 50%. He has won 124 of 559 starts in 2018 and has 2,306 career victories.
Pennington was ranked 18th by total earnings for the week, adding $254,270 to his 2018 total of $4,695,739. He has earned $63.5 million in his career to date since he began race riding in 2003.
The Parx Hall of Fame jockey has won several consecutive meet riding titles, and is the current meet leading jockey with 118 wins, 43 more than second-leading rider Mychel Sanchez.
He won his first graded race at Parx in the Parx Dash (G3) in 2015 with Tightend Touchdown; he has since won the Maryland Sprint Handicap (G3) at Pimlico with Always Sunshine and won the Parx Dash again in 2018, this time with Vision Perfect.
