After making a miraculous mid-stretch recovery in a race at Delta Downs last week, Paulina Ramirez was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for October 14-20, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.

When Paulina Ramirez’ mount in a juvenile maiden claiming event at Delta Downs ducked and hit the rail, the result could have been disastrous. The horse’s actions flipped the apprentice rider out of her irons and off the side of the horse as the pair was in the lead in the stretch shortly before the wire.

Ramirez escaped unharmed as she managed to hold on to the horse and pull herself back on top. She and her mount, St Teresa, recovered quickly enough to finish third in the race. The race was the first of five starts for Ramirez that night; she returned later on the card to win two races and place second in another.

She won four races last week and finished in the money on 63% of her 19 mounts, with earnings of $82,310.

Ramirez began her professional race riding career less than a year ago, in November 2018. She rode her first races at Delta Downs and scored her first win on just her fourth career start. She was 77 wins from 605 career starts and lifetime earnings of $1,422,766.

Ramirez hails from a family full of horsemen and riders, many of whom participate in the Quarter Horse circuits in Texas and Louisiana.
