After reaching a milestone of 5,000 career victories last week, Javier Castellano was named Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week title for October 15 – 21, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.
Castellano was one of two jockeys to win three stakes last week, and all his stakes wins came at Belmont Park on Empire Showcase Day, featuring multiple stakes races restricted to New York-breds. At the beginning of the day, Castellano’s win tally was 4,998, and he had nine mounts on the card.
His first win of the day was in his second start, the $200,000 Mohawk Stakes. Castellano was on well-supported Offering Plan ($4.70), and the duo cleared the field by six lengths.
Castellano made his 5,000th career visit to the winner’s circle in the following race, the $150,000 Hudson Handicap. Castellano and Runaway Lute sat off the pace to win by nearly a length; his milestone victory mount paid $13.40 to win.
The next race, the $200,000 Ticonderoga Stakes, was a two-horse race on paper, with Castellano and Fifty Five($3.60) getting the better of La Moneda and Junior Alvarado. The victory gave Castellano a stakes hat trick in addition to his career milestone.
In his 28 starts last week, Castellano won eight races for a win rate of 29%; he finished in the money on 57% of his mounts. He has won 187 of his 921 starts in 2018 and is 5,003 for 27,460 lifetime.
Castellano was the leading jockey by stakes earnings, with $378,622 earned last week, and he was the second leading jockey for total money earned, adding $627,426 to his 2018 total of $20.87 million. In his career to date, he has earned over $313 million.
A native of Venezuela, Castellano began riding in the United States in 1997. The four-time Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Jockey was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in 2017. He has won the Preakness Stakes twice, most recently in 2017 with Cloud Computing, has eight Breeders’ Cup wins, and multiple riding titles on the New York Racing Association circuit. He is the 34th jockey to reach the 5,000-win mark.
