Bejarano Named TT TODAY Jockey of the Week

Aug 2nd, 12
Rafael Bejarano paired with Paynter for the first time in last Sunday’s Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) and enjoyed his first win in Monmouth Park’s signature race after the Awesome Again colt powered to the lead entering the stretch and romped to a 3¾-length victory.

Paynter’s share of the Haskell’s $1- million purse helped Bejarano pace all North American jockeys in overall earnings for the week ended July 31.

Bejarano edged Ramon Dominguez in earnings during the period and also led all North American jockeys in wins with 12, one more than Dominguez.

Through July 31, the Southern California-based Bejarano ranked third among North American jockeys with 2012 earnings of $10,029,358 and was seventh in wins with 166.

A native of Arequipa, Peru, Bejarano began riding in his home country during 2001 and arrived in the U.S. in 2002, winning his first U.S. race on his very first mount at River Downs that July. Bejarano subsequently became one of the most accomplished riders in Kentucky during the mid-2000s—leading the nation with 455 wins in 2004— before relocating to California in 2007 to become first-call rider for the late Bobby Frankel. Bejarano swept the jockey titles at all five major Southern California race meets in 2008 and has become a perennial leading rider on the circuit.
